Packshots

Packshots are (one of) the most important things for your online visibility and your sales. The more information you can provide about your product, the better informed the consumer will be and the more convinced he will be to buy the product. Studies have shown that good packshots even reduce returns up to 20%

Sounds good right? So we provided 10 easy tips and tricks to increase your online sales by making quality packshot

    1. Ensure that the lighting is balanced. This way, your packshots won’t have strange shadows anywhere.

    1. Work with an even background or (even better) mask out your packshots so you can easily place them on any background.

    1. Pay attention to your colors. Ask yourself if they’re accurate, but always keep in mind that screens can sometimes differ from each other.

    1. Photograph straight on so that the dimensions of your clothing item look good and still be realistic.

    1. Additional styling elements can be beautiful for additional photos, but can also be distracting. When you shoot a packshot, it’s best to keep it clean and let the item speak for itself.

    1. The ideal format. Most webshops and social media channels work with square or portrait pictures. This way, you can show your piece of clothing in full. Decide on the formats before you start shooting, this way you avoid making
      adjustments afterwards. Time is money!

    1. Are you working with silhouettes? Then don’t forget to photograph the individual pieces as a packshot. It can always come in handy!

    1. Make sure you show more than a single image and focus on special features (a special hem,
a coloured sole, a detail on the pocket, a zippered hood, etc.) instead of leaving it to the customer to discover. Give as much information as possible.

    1. Be consistent. No one wants to see a messy webshop! Make sure there is consistency in your structure and, most importantly, in your photos. Use the same settings, shoot from the same angles, make choices about the background colour and about the pictures you will show first. This way, there is peace and quiet on your thumbnail page.

  1. People have the tendency no wadays to buy more products via their mobile phone, so they don’t want to lose a second in download time. Your task? Don’t make your images too heavy. 72 dpi is more than enough to make your product look good on a size of 1800px x 1800px

Word explanations

A STILL

This is the simplest of the packshots. Taken straight from one angle. Show at least two stills of your product – front and back. Ideally you should also show the side and – if relevant – the top, bottom (e.g. shoes) or inside (e.g. a handbag).

360°

This is a rotating packshot where the customer can view your product with a mouse-over and have it rotate and zoom in as desired.

Recent studies have shown that people who interact with a 360° presentation of a product are up to 14% more likely to buy the product than those who have only seen stills. (studied by Tibert Verhagen – University of Amsterdam, 2016)

GHOST PACKSHOTS

With a ghost packshot you can see the shapes, but not the mannequin. The benefi t of these packshots is that you can also show the inside (e.g. the lining of a jacket) which gives you a good idea of how the will piece look when you wear it.

Some marketplaces want ghost packshots to be submitted. Making your own ghost packshots is very time-consuming, so it’s better to hire a professional for this.

PACKSHOTVIDEOS THE KEY TO THE BASKET

In addition to packshots, more and more videos are made of the clothing pieces on a model (recognisable or unrecognisable). Here you can show how the fabric moves and zoom in on specifi c characteristics of the piece / silhouette.
